Kathmandu – The Nepali film "Nakchhong" (Bijuwa), which embraces Nepal’s indigenous culture and the traditional values of the Rai community, had a special screening in the UK. Held on July 20 at The Ashford Cinema, the event drew significant attendance from local leaders, entrepreneurs, VIPs, and Nepali residents in the UK.
Representing the film team, producer Jyotiraj Rai attended the screening. According to him, most viewers enjoyed the film, with many praising the story and the film’s craftsmanship.
The entire screening was organized by Kirat Rai Yayokkha UK (Ashford Chapter). The film is now scheduled to be screened in all 17 branches of Kirat Rai Yayokkha UK. Additionally, special showings have already been confirmed in five locations across Europe, as well as in Hong Kong, South Korea, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, and Malaysia.
The film features a wide ensemble cast, including Bhuvan Singh Rai, Yaseli Yonghang, Sushma Subba Gurung, Sara Rai, Taya Hang Rai, Anusha Rai, Saroj Rai, Uttam Rai, Purna Limbu, Trichu Rai, Dinesh Koirala, Hem Dilungcha Rai, Uday Subba Kurungbang, Binod Pomo, Tulsha Limbu, Madan Khodung Rai, Sasita Rai Rasa Limbu, Mission Bantawa Rai, Sagar Kerung, Babin Rai, and child actor Jason Rai, among others.
Directed by Kiran Rai, this marks his third directorial project after Lunga and Jiupanchau. Kiran also wrote the film. It is produced by Popyraj Rai, with cinematography by Babu Shrestha. The film features lyrics by Rajan Mukarung and Bishnu Kirati, music by Dinesh Kaji Bantawa, Anil Koi Rai, and vocals by Nogen Limbu and Pares Rai.
Other key team members include Bharat Limbu as chief assistant director, Ramu Shrestha as executive producer, and the script was co-edited by Kiran Rai and Jyotiraj Rai. Background music was composed by Monish Niraula, color grading by Anil Rana, and sound design/mixing by Sagar Aryal. Production controllers were Giriraj Rai and Kamal Limbu (Sarke).
Producer Jyotiraj Rai emphasized that the purpose of making the film was to preserve cultural heritage and pass it on to future generations. The film focuses on the Bijuwa (Nakchhong)—a key spiritual figure in Rai traditions, essential during rituals like festivals, marriages, ancestral rites, and death ceremonies.
The film’s Nepal release date has not yet been announced. It will first be screened at various domestic and international film festivals before being released to the public. Jyotiraj Rai has previously produced several films including Lunga, Sangam, Triveni, Papi Manche, and One Way, as well as several popular television series.
